awareness of yourself in the process of photographing people is an asset. i know of a few extroverted photographers who take great photos, but i also know that the less-assertive type can cultivate a mor genuinely sensitive and considered perspective for their work.

our differences are our gifts.

David, it's just down to experience, and the confidence that develops through it. You're just starting out doing this, things might be tough at first, but you'll soon get a feel for what's appropriate and how to get people to do what you want. They're not going to take offence because you ask them to move around, people know that good photos don't just happen on their own. Give it another go!
