Sorry, but it seems that the SMS functionality has been removed from OS X 10.5 Leopard, so this is 10.4 only for now.

You can easily enable support for sending and receiving SMS messages and making and receiving calls to and from your new Sony Ericsson W880 phone by doing this simple little hack.

  1. Open up “\Applications” on your Mac HD
  2. Ctrl-Click on Address Book and select “Show Package Contents”
  3. Find Contents\Resources\Telephony.bundle and Ctrl-Click on that, select “Show Package Contents” again
  4. Open Contents\Resources\ABDeviceCommandSets.plist in a decent text editor
  5. Find the line “<string>K700</string>”
  6. Add a line below it “<string>W880</string>”
  7. Save the plist file and restart address book - you should now be able to pair up with your w880i!

The hack relies on the fact that the K700 talks pretty much the same language as the W880.

Please Note: Some users have complained that they still cannot send SMS messages after following the previous instructions. You will still need to pair your phone with your computer and connect the Address Book app to the phone as usual by clicking on the bluetooth icon in the Address Book window (not the one at the very top of your screen). Once the icon is blue in colour you are connected and the functionality will work.

If you want to enable syncing of your address book and iCal through iSync, then all you ned to do is install my iSync plugin for the W880.

i also installed the plugin you made; it’s working but iSync keeps telling me that the syncing failed… even though it seems it worked.

    Hi David,

    the isync-plugin works fine.
The Addressbook “hack” doesn´t work. I followed your instruction with “K750″ at the right place but it doesn´t work. I get a connection with my W880i in the Addressbook but “SMS Message” stays grey!
I´m running 10.4.10 now, but it did not work while I run 10.4.1.

Do you have an idea what else I could do?

    Thanks and greetings,
    Peter__

    Hi!

I got my new W880i just today and was very disappointed when I recognized, that it is not officially supported by the Mac OS X Address Book. So I was more than happy when I found your website and your good advise! Works like a charm for me, now I can send SMS via the Address Book as before with my K700i.

    Thanks again!

  7. Rob Says:

    Thanks,

Works a treat with my K800i.

You are star. Thank you so much!

  9. Ricardo Says:

Hello mate! Telephony.bundle appears to me as a file and I can’t choose “Show Package Contents”. Any advice?

  10. David Says:

    Hi Ricardo,

A bundle is like an application in that it’s really a directory masquerading as a single file. Right-click, or Ctrl-click on it to show the “Show Package Contents” menu option.

    David.

  11. MAMBO Says:

Hi I have followed the instructions to the letter but all I have is grayed out on send sms message and dial with cell phone any ideas what I am doing wrong

    many thanks

  12. David Says:

Hi, after restarting the address book app you still need to click on the bluetooth icon in order for it to connect to your phone - Otherwise the options will still be greyed out.

    David.

hi. thank you for your time. i have replaced my hacked version of the plugin with your hacked version for the custom tiff. i also hacked the adress book plist as per your instructions but i am still grayed out and cannot use sms or dialing from address book. i am on 10.4.7 and a. b. v 2.3 and used the appropriate version of your plugin. thanks!

  14. Io Says:

This trick also worked fine with my sony ericsson z550a (I just introduced Z550 in the file, just before the Z600 string).

  15. David Says:

Some users were experiencing difficulty in connecting their phone after following the hack instructions. I have added extra information on how to use the Address Book application to the post.

    David.

  16. David Says:

Cazabache, please see my updated post if you have modified your Address Book file, but are still greyed out.

  17. Alex Schenkman Says:

Thank you very very much for this info.
    It worked beatifully for us!

  18. Chris Says:

I think this has failed under OS X 10.5 Leopard - there is no “Contents\Resources\Telephony.bundle” that I can find, and on MacRumors there’s a thread which says you can no longer send text messages from the Address Book via Bluetooth and your own phone…

(Google “No Bluetooth link from Address Book in Leopard”)

  19. David Says:

Thanks for the heads-up Chris. Unbelievable that they’ve stripped the functionality in Leopard!
